Growing pumpkins: all you need to know - We Are Agriculture

Are you ready to grow pumpkins?

Would you like to put them in your garden too?

Did you know that you can grow it, with some attention, even on the balcony of your home?

We will answer these and many other questions in this article: how to grow pumpkin?

The pumpkin (Cucurbita maxima, L. 1753)

Before seeing how to grow pumpkins, let's first see what its characteristics and origins are, in order to best meet its environmental needs. Pumpkin belongs to the Cucurbitaceae family, like melon and cucumber. It is native to the hot countries of Central America and was imported to Europe in the seventeenth century. Some varieties of pumpkin, spontaneous in Europe, were already known by the Romans but today they are no longer part of the cultivated species.

Environmental needs

Given its tropical origins, squash requires a warm-temperate climate, although it resists low temperatures better than other cucurbits. It resists low temperatures, as long as they do not last for more than 3-4 days. The minimum temperature it can withstand is around 7-8 ° C.

In Italy it can be grown without protections throughout the summer, although a good mulch can help the plant against water stress. If you want to anticipate cultivation at the end of winter, or if you want to grow in regions that tend to be cooler, then it is necessary to intervene with adequate protection systems. These can be both mulch, and mini greenhouses (of the bells to be placed above the plants), and possibly the agro-textiles (non-woven fabric).

Continuing our guide on how to grow pumpkins, let's now see which types of soil are most suitable. First of all it must be said that the pumpkin it adapts to many types of soils, but the best for this plant is a deep, well-drained soil, rich in organic matter and with a low amount of clay. The pH, on the other hand, it must be neutral or basically acidic: from 6.5 to 7.5.

The element that must never be missing, when growing pumpkins, is water. If the ground is lacking in water, albeit for a limited period, the absorption of nutrients is reduced a lot and consequently the growth of the plant and the fruit slows down until it stops. If, on the contrary, the irrigation water is given in excess, one determines scarcity of air at the root level and the plant could die of asphyxiation. In this regard, read what are the negative effects of water stagnation.

Main varieties

If you really want to grow pumpkins, you first need to know which ones to grow. Pumpkin varieties are divided into two types, depending on the species from which they derive:

  • CAKE PUMPKINS (Cucurbita moschata)
    1. Pumpkin full of Naples: variety with a very developed stem, with very elongated fruit, cylindrical in shape, enlarged and slightly curved at the end; the rind is yellow - reddish and the pulp is yellow and sweet.
    2. The so-called also belong to this group flask pumpkins, called in this way because of their typical shape; however, they are very little widespread.

Grow pumpkins

To grow pumpkins, you must first dig holes 3-4 cm deep, no more. The holes must be dug at a distance of 1-2 meters from each other along the row. The rows should be about 2 meters apart. Subsequently, in each little hole 3-4 seeds should be placed. After about a month, when the shoots have 4-5 leaves, a thinning will be carried out, leaving only one plant in each hole. obviously the best, strongest and most beautiful plant will be chosen. In the case of sowing instead in a protected environment, this must be performed 40-50 days before the date in which the transplant is to be carried out in the open field. The transplant must be done only and only when the environmental and soil temperatures allow it.

Whether you want to grow pumpkins in your garden or on your balcony, the soil where you want to plant them must be properly prepared. In the garden, you can resort to plowing or digging 30-40 cm deep at the end of autumn or at the beginning of winter. In the event that the sowing is carried out in a protected environment and then the plants are transplanted in the open field, then you can carry out these two processes between late February and early March. It is important to harrow or hoe to break up the clods of earth.

If you want to put it in a vaseInstead, know that you need a very large and very tall pot, filled with soft soil and possibly enriched with peat or compost. As an alternative to these, a slight intake of humic acids could be very useful.

The work to be performed during cultivation there are purely two:

  1. Weeding: must be done several times, especially during the summer, in order to eliminate weeds.
  2. Tamping: if mulching is NOT adopted, this agronomic practice favors the accumulation of soil at the base of the lateral jets at the precise point where they detach from the main stem.

Now that you know how to grow pumpkins, it's time to harvest them. Pumpkins should be harvested when fully ripe, from mid-September to the end of October. A symptom of ripening occurs when the stems and leaves begin to dry out. An exception is the medium-small fruit varieties, which ripen from the end of July to the end of August.

Pumpkins should be harvested by cutting the stalk, so that it remains intact, as close as possible to the stem. Pumpkins must have their stems intact. The rind must not have cracks and the pulp must not show softening: these signs indicate that the fruit is too ripe.

The apples they are one of the most cultivated and appreciated fruits: they are very good and also healthy. Our dream

"Our dream is to give everyone the opportunity to grow whatever they want in a simple, natural and healthy way right at home."

Conventional agriculture has a strong environmental impact: it consumes a lot of water, uses pesticides and pesticides which, by filtering into the soil, pollute the aquifers.

For decades, many Research Centers and Universities have faced the problem of finding a system that allows them to produce much more food with less water, less space and less pollution in environments other than traditional places where conventional agriculture is normally practiced.

The proposed solution is the cultivation in Vertical Farm. Vertical Farm which literally means "vertical farm", is a structure divided on several levels in which it is possible to grow plants without the need for soil, sunlight and above all without the addition of polluting chemicals.

We dream of one mini greenhouse that anyone can install at home, with which he can produce the vegetables he prefers, thus combining the useful, the possibility of consuming very fresh and very healthy food, with the pleasure, the pleasure of sowing and enjoying the growth of his vegetables and flowers.

How to plant and grow to grow pumpkin

1. seed seed (if applicable)

If you live in a Nordic climate, you have no choice but to start sowing inland. This is because pumpkins are very sensitive to excessive heat or frost.

So, if you are looking to grow summer squash, you will need to watch out for the latest spring frosts. If you are looking to grow winter squash, you will need to jump on it when the heat is not that strong, but also before frost.

However, the pumpkin is not well transplanted. Therefore, if you have to start the seeds indoors, you will have to use peat pots so that you can plant the entire pot in the ground and give the seedling a better chance of survival. You will need to start sowing 2 to 4 weeks before the last frost.

Also, if you are growing summer squash, it is advisable to plant a batch in mid-summer, because many of the pests that bother pumpkins have already disappeared by that time.

2. soil requirements

Zucchini isn't that fussy when it comes to soil. The main thing is that the squash needs full sun, and the soil must be moist but well drained. You don't want soggy ground.

So, if you can provide this for zucchini, then they are likely to grow without too much trouble. If they don't, we'll cover what may have gone wrong a few points further.

3. Implant

If you are planting your pumpkin from seed (which is recommended, if possible), you will want to plant it in a flower bed or on a hill. In the garden flower bed, they need to be planted 2 to 3 feet apart and 1cm deep.

However, if you plant them on a hill, you will take 3 or 4 seeds and put them together. Then some soil will build up around them. If you are in the north, it is recommended to plant on a hill because the seeds are directly away from the ground, which provides more heat for germination. Hills must be 5 to 6 feet apart.

Also, for planting, you need to know that most varieties of summer squash now come in bush form. Winter squash varieties are vine-shaped. So plan accordingly if you are growing a vine. The vines must be planted at a distance of between 8 and 12 feet from each other.

Additionally, most pumpkins are fully ripe and ready to harvest within 60 days.

4. Water and fertilizer

The last step in planting pumpkins is to water them regularly and systematically. Once a week, you will need to water the plants thoroughly. This means that you will give the pumpkin plants about an inch of water so that the water reaches the roots.

How to grow the Halloween pumpkin

The cultivation of the Halloween pumpkin does not require special needs, other than those of the common pumpkins intended for the table. Since it is a vegetable to bring to the table and that it spends well to make numerous recipes, it is important to give it the care and attention that will facilitate its growth.

It belongs to the cucurbit family, therefore one of those horticultural ones that need large quantities of nutrients in the soil to grow well and tasty. It is a good representative of the same family as zucchini, cucumbers and even watermelons.

It has a good capacity for growth and adaptability to different soils, it does not fear exposure to full sun even if the ripening period occurs towards the end of summer and the beginning of autumn. Pumpkins keep well and can be stored for a long time detached from the plant and then eaten during the winter in refreshing soups.

One of the precautions to follow when deciding to grow pumpkins is that they must be able to have a large plot of land available. If you have decided to dedicate only a small fraction of your garden to the cultivation of pumpkins, you will need to prepare elements that can support their climbing development.

If it does not find a foothold, the pumpkin has a drooping habit and expands on the ground, risking to suffocate the other crops. When it clings and extends in height it must then find the right support to be helped to bear the weight of the fruit. They can grow quite a lot and the fragile branches cannot hold them without breaking.

36 mila follower in 4 ore.
